According to South Carolina law, one is not permitted to marry his or her stepmother/stepfather *, but one is perfectly welcome to marry one's first cousin. Now, I'm not saying that marrying one's stepmother is such a hot idea, but at least said marriage would not be actively trifling with the gene pool. * And yes, this refers to a period after one's father/mother is no longer married to the step-person. Fortunately, South Carolina did have the good sense to implement law prohibiting bigamy.
Marc and I are going to South Carolina next week with my parents to tidy up wedding arrangements, as well as lie and fry on the beach. We figured we'd apply for our marriage license while we're down there. In researching SC marriage license bureaucracy, I uncovered this factoid:
